Alright, so, my son’s birthday was coming up, and I wanted to do something a little different this year. He’s not a little kid anymore, so the usual “Happy Birthday, sport!” just wasn’t going to cut it. I thought, “Why not try to write a funny poem?” Not gonna lie, I’m no poet, but hey, it’s the thought that counts, right?

So, I started by brainstorming some ideas. I grabbed a pen and a piece of paper, sat down at the kitchen table, and just started writing down everything that came to mind about my son. His quirks, his habits, the funny things he’s done over the years… you name it, I wrote it down. Then I spent hours to sort out what I wrote down.
Next, I tried to put some of those ideas into rhymes. This was the hard part. I mean, what rhymes with “gamer” or “procrastinator”? It took a while, but I managed to string together a few lines that I thought were pretty good. Some of them were silly, some were a little sarcastic, but they all came from the heart, you know?
I spent a good chunk of the evening rewriting and editing the poem. I read it out loud a few times to make sure it flowed okay and didn’t sound too cheesy. I even asked my wife for her opinion, and she gave me a few pointers. Finally I think I made it.
When his birthday rolled around, I printed out the poem, stuck it in a card. He opened it, read it, and… he laughed! He actually laughed! He even said it was the best birthday card he’d ever gotten. Mission accomplished! It was a hit! And you know what? It was actually kind of fun to write. Maybe I’ll do it again next year. But for now, I’m just happy that I made my son’s day a little bit brighter. That’s what’s a father for, right?
Here’s what I ended up with:
- Happy birthday, my dear boy,
- You’re no longer a child with a toy.
- You’re a man, full of dreams,
- And some pretty crazy schemes.
- You’re a year older today,
- But you still like to play.
- Video games all night long,
- Even though it’s so wrong.
- You eat all the food in the house,
- And you’re quiet as a mouse.
- Except when you’re yelling at the screen,
- Because you lost to your team.
- But I love you, my son, it’s true,
- There’s no one quite like you.
- So have a great day, my dear,
- And another fantastic year!
That’s all for today.
It’s not Shakespeare, but it’s from the heart. Hope you like it!
